There's something endlessly satisfying about unpacking and mastering the Groundhog Day playgrounds of Hitman 3. It should get boring; watching the same guards patrol their patrols, or workers work and characters wander well-worn tracks you know so well. But it never gets old. Knowing there's the tiniest crack to slip through, or a moment to exploit that can leave a target oh so tragically killed is never dulled by the repetition of running and rerunning the scenario like a time traveler that can only leave the loop after meeting the right conditions.

Hitman 3 continues and concludes the story told in Hitman and Hitman 2, expounding on Agent 47’s and his handler Diana Burnwood’s struggle to topple Providence, the Illuminati-style group of heartless elites that influences world events through terrorism, espionage and other nefarious means.

The game is split into six main chapters, and each takes the player to a new, beautifully realized location. While the art direction would presumably lead to the game being gorgeous on any system, the level of fidelity provided by the PlayStation 5 is staggering. This is absolutely one of the system's best looking games, and this visual richness translates to a deeply immersive experience. The incredible soundtrack also provides a heightened sense of weight to these locales, truly making the world of Hitman 3 one worth exploring.

The best Hitman missions are big and open, set in a picturesque place where bald assassin Agent 47 can go about murdering his targets in a variety of elaborate ways. Most of those options involve impersonating other people by wearing their clothes. But every so often, the series tries linearity on for size. Its worst levels constrain your sense of freedom as you try to off an architect of some illicit criminal operation, funneling you into a more rigid style of play that restricts 47’s movements. With the exception of 2012’s Hitman: Absolution, where they’re the main focus, these levels tend to come late in the games, when developers ratchet up the tension by guiding players through increasingly flashy, bombastic sequences where being able to deviate from the script would ruin the drama.

The one big game changer addition is a PS VR mode that, at time of writing, I've not had a chance to play as it arrives in a launch day patch. It's a shame I couldn't test it because it's definitely an interesting idea I'm excited to try. But even if the option was an unplayable mess there's still more than enough here to recommend Hitman 3 without it. This is a great end to the trilogy, with a satisfying conclusion made from enjoyable and endlessly entertaining levels. Well done 47.
