ハロウィン。それすなわち、この現世と異界の境界が虚ろになり、この世ならざる者の力が強まるとき。

そう、例えば私たちのような。

そう、例えば、我らのような。

自分たち白黒無常は一つの体に二つの魂、二人で一人のハンター。この世の理を超え、彷徨い惑うサバイバーを異界へと連れ去るものだ。

思えば、今日のゲームはいつも以上に調子が良かった。

サバイバーを追っても疲れがたまらないし、まるで予知のようにサバイバーの動きが読めた。災厄の一撃も出やすい。そうして、暗号機をいまだ三機残した状態で、残るサバイバーは負傷した庭師一人のみ。

勝ちましたね、と確信する。

勝ったな、と確信をもてる。

どこへ隠れているのかと耳を澄まそうとしたときに聞こえてきたのは、椅子を破壊した通知音。

あぁ可哀想に。仲間を失い、最後の悪あがき。まぁそれくらいは許してあげましょう、安心して良い。すぐに仲間の元へ誘いましょう。一人は寂しいものですから。分かる、分かりますとも。

そうして彼女の元へと飛んでいくと、待ち構えていたかのように立ち尽くしていた。

「こんばんは、一人残されたお嬢さん。今日の私たち、そして今宵の我らはとても気分が良い。命乞いするくらいの時間はさしあげましょうか？」

「……こんばんは、なの。随分と余裕があるのね。」

「まぁ、この状況ですから。さぁさ、言いたいことがあるのなら生きているうちにどうぞ？」

どうせ勝てるゲームだ。勝者の特権として、獲物をいたぶって遊んだところで許されるだろう。ただの非力な人間に、化物となり果てた我らに勝つ術はないのだから。

「……それなら一つ、気になっていたことがあるの。」

「ほう？なんでしょう、聞いてあげますよ。聞くだけですけれど。」

「ずうっと疑問に思っていたのだけれど。貴方の大事な大事なその傘、壊したらどうなっちゃうのかな？もう一人の『白黒無常』さんは、どうなるのかな？」

「ッ！」

どうなるかなど自分たちにも分からない、分からないけれど。

それでもきっと貴方が、お前が、消えてしまう。

そんなことは耐えられない、二度も失いたくない。

それだけは避けなければ！さっさと止めをさしてしまえ、庭師が何を企もうとあと一撃で終わるのだから！

そうして傘を振り上げたところで目に入ったのは、腰にハンマー、両手にスパナとレンチを構えた庭師の姿だった。

「傘が壊れたらどうなるのか、私が確かめてあげるの！」

「こ、っの……！」

そのまま振り下ろせば攻撃は当たったのかもしれない、それでも万が一にでも壊されたとしたら。そう考えると、迂闊に攻撃は出来ず、後ずさってしまった。。

守らなければ！傘だけは何としても守らなければ！

「あはっ、どうしたの白黒さん！ほらほら、私は逃げも隠れもしてないのに！」

おかしい、おかしい。こんなはずではなかった。

容赦なく工具を振り回す庭師を何とかかわしながら、頭の中に鳴り響くエマージェンシー。

今日はこの世ならざる者の力が高まる、そんな私たちがこのように追い詰められるなど！

そこまで考えたところで思い出す。

今宵はハロウィン。

現世と異界の境界が虚ろになる、私たちは異界の者、けれど、この庭師は本当に現世の者なのか？

今日のゲームは、まだ終わらない。
